When Firo-B isn’t enough…symptoms or cause?

Will Schutz Phd

I popped to my GP the other day and having sat there in the consultation (feeling about 7 years old as usual) came away asking myself “Are they treating the symptoms here, or the cause?”

There are so many things that we attempt to find out more about and change in our lives personally and professionally. we often turn to psychometrics like Myers Briggs or Firo-B.

I used OPP’s FIRO-B for years helping people understand their behavioural needs and it’s a really effective tool but I can still remember the feeling I got when someone told me there was more and you can go deeper a bit like loving a book and finding there’s a whole series…

Will Schutz phd, who originally developed FIRO theory came back to psychometrics after years of observations in group development about what lay behind how people feel compelled to behave. He went on to enrich Firo-B and rename it Element Firo B and add to it; Element Firo F for Feelings and Element Firo S for Self Concept amongst others. They now form part of the elements of awareness from The Human Element approach to personal development.

  1. I agree Ben. A lot of people want quick fix without delving to the root cause and that’s like papering over cracks. It can help in the short run but sooner or later you need to sort out the foundations.

The closer to the root cause you get, the more effective (and wide-reaching) the outcome.
